Great things often have the smallest beginnings. In November 2015 a small group of plein air artists huddled in a Stanford University cafeteria as rain fell outside. Artist Uma Kelkar introduced me to a simple drawing instrument, the brushpen. I tried it out on a piece of watercolor paper. I could draw variable ink lines without the dip pen mess. I've had an interest in cartooning since childhood. In combination with a vector graphics editor app on my computer, I could draw professional looking cartoons! The rest, as they say, is history. I've moved on from the brushpen to a powerful digital drawing app using a Wacom tablet and stylus. The pages on this web site are examples of my past and present work.
I'm originally from downstate Illinois but have lived in the Chicagoland area, piedmont North Carolina, and over 40 years in Northern California. I graduated from Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois with a BS in graphics and mechanical design. I minored in art, which was my "true love" but art majors have an uphill battle making a living in an industrial society. During my many years as a mechanical and electrical engineer I had a retirement goal: be an artist. I've worked in oil, acrylics, pottery, and watercolor, which I still enjoy.
