Richard (Dick) Zunkel is a central Illlinois native. He attended Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois where he received a BS degree in mechanical design. He minored in art, his first love, though economic reality prevailed. Upon graduation he located in suburban Chicago, started a family and a long career in door automation and security. He continued to apply the painting skills he learned at Bradley as time permitted. He was transferred to North Carolina in an engineering management position yet continued to paint watercolors plein-air with noted professional local artist Bill Brewer
Dick attended night classes in raku pottery and portrait painting at Wingate College (now a University). Applying his pottery skills, he served as an apprentice in a country pottery in Monroe, NC. In 1978 he moved his family to Princeton, Illinois upon accepting an engineering management position. He turned his artistic ambitions to scenery building for a local theatre group. In 1983 he succumbed to the lure of California and relocated to the San Francisco Bay area to manage a start-up business. He continued his art studies at the San Francisco Art Institute where he also served as a guest instructor teaching plein-air watercolor painting to adults and undergraduates. Dick is a member of the Santa Clara Valley Watercolor Society and paints "plein-air" weekly at locations throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.
